1888-1959Procedente de los escenarios de Broadway, llega a Hollywood como actor a comienzos de los anos 10. En los 20 empieza a dirigir peliculas y se incorpora al sonoro con un largometraje que forma parte de la historia del cine, En el viejo Arizona. La pelicula empezo a dirigirla e interpretarla en su papel principal Raoul Walsh, quien perdio accidentalmente un ojo en el curso del rodaje. Fue sustituido por Cum mings en la direccion y por Warner Baxter en la interpretacion de Cisco Kid. Se conservo, no obstante, parte del material rodado por Walsh. Cummings dirigio, tambien, la segunda pelicula de la serie, con el mismo Warner Baxter como protagonista. El medio cinematografico en el que ahora se desarrolla su actividad le proporciona a Peckinpah, entre otras cosas, algunos amigos influyentes como el actor Joel McCrea o el director Charles Marquis Warren. Este le proporciona la oportunidad de escribir para la serie de television Gunsmoke; aquel sera uno de los dos protagonistas de su segunda pelicula, Duelo en la alta sierra. Llega a dirigir episodios televisivos antes de que la Fox le permita rodar su primer largometraje, que es un fracaso de publico y critica. No obstante, sus exitos televisivos le permiten obtener un contrato de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer para rodar su segunda pelicula. Pero fue en el rodaje de la tercera, Mayor Dundee, en el que se iniciaria la maldicion que parecio pesar sobre los hombros de Peckinpah, que convertiria, en lo sucesivo, cada rodaje en una aventura que nunca se sabia si alcanzaria el exito. Por ejemplo, fue apartado de la direccion de El rey del juego (The Cincinnati Kid, Norman Jewison, 1965) que, con toda seguridad, el hubiera elevado a una altura de la que, por desgracia, carecio el filme en su estado definitivo, pese al magnifico guion que le sirvio de soporte. Saltando de productora a productora, incluso de pais a pais, ya que paso un par de anos en Gran Bretana, donde rueda Perros de paja (Straw Dogs, 1971), uno de sus filmes mas conocidos y apreciados, llega a conformar una esplendida filmografia que solo baja de nivel en sus ultimas peliculas. Sam Peckinpah es el maximo representante del western crepuscular. Su primera pelicula, The Deadly Companions, pertenece al genero, y a el dedico lo mejor de sus esfuerzos, radicalmente incomprendidos por parte de los productores. Duelo en la alta sierra es un filme de un vigor inusual, lleno de nostalgia, riguroso y bello como los paisajes por los que discurre. Mayor Dundee es la gran obra frustrada del director. En el estado en que la dejaron los responsables de Columbia sigue siendo una pelicula soberbia, esbozo de la obra definitiva que pudo llegar a ser. Grupo salvaje es la pelicula emblematica de Peckinpah. Todas las discusiones acerca del uso de la violencia en sus filmes arrancan de esta amarga reflexion sobre la vida y los seres humanos. 1927Graduado en la Escuela de Arte Dramatico de Yale, es profesor de teatro durante algun tiempo, antes de dirigir programas de television. Procedente de ese medio, este mediocre realizador se asoma al cine en 1962 con la pelicula Belle Sommers que, al parecer, no es sino el episodio piloto de una serie de television. A partir de entonces dirige algunas peliculas, entre las que cabe citar dos westerns de poca monta que, sorprendentemente, obtuvieron una repercusion muy por encima de sus meritos. En particular, el primero de ellos, que es tambien la segunda pelicula de Silverstein, gozo del suplemento de prestigio anadido que corresponde a un Oscar de Hollywood, el alcanzado por su actor principal, Lee Marvin.Cat Ballou (La ingenua explosiva). 1965. 96 minutos. 1904-1972Forma parte del equipo de colaboradores del gran Max Reinhardt y, en calidad de tal, conoce y trabaja con Murnau disenando los decorados de El ultimo (Der letzte Mann, 1924) y Fausto (Faust, 1926). Va con el a los Estados Unidos, pero vuelve a Alemania para dirigir, en colaboracion con Robert Siodmak, Menschen am Sonntag (1929), que todavia hoy es gratamente recordada desde los criterios mas exigentes. De nuevo en America, inicia una brillante carrera como director de peliculas de serie B, hasta el punto de ser considerado con frecuencia el numero uno de este tipo de productos. Puede el espectador acercarse con confianza a cualquiera de sus peliculas con la seguridad de que no saldra defraudado. Desde la ya lejana Satanas (The Black Cat, 1934) hasta algunos de sus ultimos filmes dirigidos en Europa a comienzos de los anos 60 de tema mas o menos epico, como Anibal (Hannibal, 1960), cada pelicula de este peculiar realizador centroeuropeo es un motivo de satisfaccion estetica. Mencion particularisima merece Detour (1946), sin lugar a dudas la mejor pelicula de Ulmer y una de las mejores del denominado genero negro. Su primer western, Thun der Over Texas, lo firmo como John Warner; el se gundo, The Naked Dawn, es de una plastica impecable. 20 Warhol, Andy
1928-1982Andrew Warhola, nacido en Pittsburgh, hijo de inmigrantes eslovacos, se gradua en 1949 y, poco despues, lo encontramos ya en Nueva York como ilustrador de revistas. En 1960 crea un canal privado de television, WarholTV. En 1962 empieza con su serie de dibujos mas popular, la de Campbell, y en 1963 rueda su primera pelicula, muy personal, como todo lo suyo. Manager musical, en 1968 sufre un atentado del que logra recuperarse. Asociado de alguna forma al cine-basura que personifica Paul Morrisey, es responsable de unos 70 titulos, de los que quince son cortometrajes. El inefable Andy Warhol tambien contribuyo a la historia del western, de manera minima, eso si; un unico filme, con guion del citado Morrisey, que en sus origenes era una variante de la historia de Romeo y Julieta, en este caso Ramona y Julian.
